1000 Islands State Forests Loop

Route Description

This route loops through and around 16 state forest areas and parks. Begin in Adams on Route 189 and head south to Lorraine. From Lorraine, continue south on Route 92, skirting the eastern edge of the Winona State Forest on Route 92, merging onto Route 17. At the intersection of Route 17 and Route 15, head west on 15 toward Sandy Creek and Lacona. Explore these towns and continue south on Route 48 around the edge of the Sandy Creek State Forest to Richland. Fuel up and head west on Route 2, passing through Orwell and into the Chateauguay State Forest. Continue riding through the Salmon River State Forest, around the Salmon River Reservoir, toward Redfield, dropping south on Route 27 to connect to Route 39. Grab a bite at the Hayloft Pub or the Cheese Factory Bar N Grill and continue riding on Route 44 toward Route 46.

Head north to Osceola, and around the northern edge of the East Osceola State Forest and stop to stretch your legs on a nature walk. Continue on Route 46, crossing the Salmon River and riding for miles through scenic countryside. In West Leydon continue north on Route 26, with the Adirondack Mountain foothills in view, passing toward Turin, home of Snow Ridge Ski Resort, which hosts summer concerts.

Whetstone Gulf State Park is a popular summer spot, offering nature walks, a stunning waterfall and place to swim and picnic. Continue north to Lowville and stop to enjoy the town's many attractions, restaurants and shopping. Head west on Route 12 to Route 177 and begin to close the loop, riding around Grand Powell Memorial State Forest, Sears Pond State Forest, Tug Hill State Forest, and Gould Corners State Forest. At the intersection of Route 177 and Fuller Road, head south along Fish Creek and back to Adams to close the loop.
